Research & Academic Partnerships

A Real-World Community Space for Research, Education, and Public Engagement

Araiguma welcomes collaboration with universities, researchers, student organizations, educators, and academic programs interested in games, community spaces, culture, technology, and public engagement.

As a publicly accessible Japanese arcade, community venue, and third place located in Downtown Urbana, we provide opportunities to engage with real communities, real events, and real participants outside of a traditional classroom or laboratory setting.

Located in Downtown Urbana, just minutes from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Araiguma provides a real-world environment where research, education, culture, and community intersect.

Programs that make academic work more accessible to the public are especially welcome.

Why Araiguma?

Many research and educational projects take place in classrooms, laboratories, and controlled environments.

Araiguma offers something different.

As an active arcade, event venue, radio space, volunteer organization, and community gathering place, Araiguma provides access to naturally occurring social interaction, organized competition, hobby communities, public events, and everyday community life.

For students and researchers interested in how people actually interact, learn, play, compete, and build community, this environment can offer perspectives that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

What We’re Looking For

The strongest partnerships typically:

  • Benefit participants and the broader community
  • Provide meaningful educational value
  • Respect the space and those who frequent it
  • Encourage public engagement
  • Create opportunities for collaboration between institutions and local communities

We are especially interested in projects that explore the positive role that games, culture, and third places can play in people’s lives.
