Absolute great shape, was a donation! Nothing major missing, just monitors. All the wiring is there, PSU, topper hardware. All the missing panels in the photo above are here just removed in the photo. Panel fitment looks rough, that's cause all the bolts are missing, someone had this taken apart to pull the monitors and just set it aside after that.

A lot of new parts ordered from Japan, going to get this fully functional first then some time far in the future worry about cosmetic stuff like a respray of all the yellowed plastics to color match original.
Sadly, this machine will never go downstairs. Unless we figure out a ramp and pulley system to make that happen, this thing is big and while it's not terribly heavy, it's awkward to move unless it's 4 or more people in a wide open space moving in one direction!!
Replacing the SCSI CD-ROM drive on the CPS-III with a MicroSD card seems to not be documented so well, so here is my take on it. This was done with the Darksoft Super BIOS. Listing the exact tools I had used to make this work.

This guide assumes you had been using a 3rd Strike CD, and the game has already been flashed to RAM. You are just changing from the CD-ROM to a CD-ROM Emulator.

CD-ROM image used is attached. It is a copy of the CD-ROM that was found in the drive when we got our first CPS-III. From the file name, it was determined to be a Darksoft Multi-CD image that has the Darksoft logo removed from the boot screen.

This version is specifically for the Darksoft BIOS, not a stock 3rd Strike Security Cart. The original thread on this can be found here: https://www.arcade-projects.com/threads/...leases.36/

If your SCSI2SD board looks like this,
This guide is for you.
Once you hit 'Continue' again, you will have a screen showing your ISO and your SD card. Press 'START' and the copy will begin. Once complete, remove the SD card from your computer and insert to your SC2SCSI board.

Configuring SCSI2SD for CD-ROM:

If you stopped at the above step, and plugged into your CPS-III, this is what you would see,
Which is interesting, because it's seeing a CD-ROM drive and seeing a CD-ROM, but reporting it as invalid. This happened because the SCSI emulator is set to HDD. To change this to CD-ROM, you will need "scsi2sd-util.exe" from the following location: http://www.codesrc.com/mediawiki/index.p...I2SD#Files

When opening up, I could see the version that I had. After determining the correct version, I was able to use the one shown.

Opening the application, select the 'Device 1' tab

Your device will be set at whatever the outfit that built the board up had it on last. Most likely Hard Drive as that's the most common use for these SCSI emulators. However with CPS-III, we need to emulate a CD-ROM device.

You will set 'Device Type' to 'CD-ROM'

Then set 'Device Size' to '700' and the prefix to 'MB'

The should match the above. Now, navigate to 'File' and select 'Save to Device'. The settings should then write to the SCSI2SD and say completed.

When connecting to the CPS-III, use the Ribbon Cable ONLY. You do not require the additional power from the JAMMA edge (on the 4 Pin connector).
The device began to flash the firmware, the device disconnected, then over and over I heard the USB connect sound, then disconnect sound. The device seemed to have bricked.

Going back to File>Upgrade Firmware, and selecting 'firmware_bundle-v4.8.04.scsi2sd' again, it started the flashing process again, thus not being bricked. The process then showed as completed, and was recognized again.

Setting all my settings to 700MB CD-ROM, navigating to save, there was no longer an error and the parameters had saved.
Everything worked after this. I did not record version numbers but it did in fact update my firmware to 4.4, which I believe previously was 4.1.

Which is interesting, because it's seeing a CD-ROM drive and seeing a CD-ROM, but reporting it as invalid. This happened because the SCSI emulator is set to HDD.

Alright, doing a second Versatile City since the player base has been growing so much for 3rd Strike, we needed a second! I was on the lookout for more monitors and Naomi mentioned she could donate a pair of like sets!

A lot of people have been reaching out asking how these are done, so this will be split to two different threads, one for the current Versatile City ( A ) and this new one ( B ) which is more of a log of the process.

Your setup will most likely vary. The beauty of this over a cab is it's versatility and movability. You can bring it to an event in a car, you can take it to a major with you more easily, you can plug in whatever the hell you want with nice lower hour tubes and hardware, it's just an infinite number of variables.

Versatile City B here is using two Sylvania 20" TVs, both with S-VIDEO and Composite input. If you have S-VIDEO use it over Composite. If you have Component, use that over S-VIDEO and Composite.

Something that catches some I've spoken with off guard, is don't worry about finding the same set to put back to back. Some can argue that on side has better picture than the other or whatever have you, but you can say the same about varying age on a persons sticks, you can say it about two like cabs, and same for two of the same TVs.

Getting them the same, or at least within the same series to look the same, is great if you can do it, but if you just find two of the same size, head to head those!! You'll eventually find a like pair if you really hunt for it.

1P Side = Sylvania 6420FE (Tube/Chassis TBD)
2P Side = Sylvania CR202SL8 (Tube/Chassis TBD)

We're using Radio Shack S-VIDEO / Composite / Audio Splitter/Amplifier. This is important! Passive splitting will not work (Very well), you must have an active splitter, meaning powered. The system you're hooking up, to the input type your TVs have will vary!

Any sort of good Digital to Analog Video Converter or sometimes called "HDMI to A/V" or "HDMI to S-VIDEO" converters. Buy enough, open enough, from 20$ to 100$ and you're sure to find the same chips and they will show up under Display Properties in windows as Macrosilicon (Though, won't specifically say a chip ID, you might find that under device manager if you dig). You can check them all out HERE. These guys are very popular for their chips, and do great stuff.

To get as close an angle to the Sega VS City, the wood block size used is: 3" D x 2-1/4" H (Length is dependent on the TV size - If you have a table saw, you can do a nice wedge to get your perfect angle!)

 PXL_20231202_015048043.jpg (Size: 284.16 KB / Downloads: 0)

Then comes your USB disconnects. If you don't want to tether them to your table, you can screw in wire tie mounts to your monitor angle blocks, or use adhesive backing to tack them to the monitor, whatever you fancy. Ours are mounted on the tables. Something you'll want to be aware of, is USB length. The shorter the better, but in the case of a Versatile City, that's easier said than done.

You factor in your players. If their pad or stick has a 6ft to 10ft USB cable, and you have a 6ft USB disconnect from the game system of choice, you're at 12-16ft.

USB 2.0 Max length on a passive cable is 16FT. USB 1.0 is half that. So to eliminate any issues, no matter the length of your disconnect, even if 3ft, you want a "bus powered" meaning no external power, it's powered at the USB port (editing to say, you can use external power if you find a situation -- we only need bus powered so that's why it's mentioned here), "Active USB Extension". Bluerigger does really great Active Extensions, after a certain length they have an external power option in addition to bus power.

You also need a power strip that can handle everything. If you expand to streaming your setup, want to add fans or additional speakers, spectator monitors, you'll need something with enough outlets to compensate. We use the Belkin F9D1000-15:

So with all of that, here is a handy A/V Diagram you can use to see how it all goes together:

One of the reasons this forum was made was to publicly document how we do a lot of stuff so we have links to point to when getting asked questions like, how are certain things done? I want to do this too!

Since it's been such a long time topic too, this is super exciting! Firstly, huge thanks to everyone who donated on the Ko-Fi! 80% of our goal was initially covered till the goal had to be kicked up in order to support a Live Monitor!
Something we will use for this version and those of the future! This was originally just explaining the process of streaming MBON, however a lot of interest online had shown, people were also interested in just getting a LAN also going at their spaces!

Notes :

Everything here, this will work for any HDMI device (or other with conversions). XBOX 360s, PS4s and even Namco BNA1. So we have lots of compatibility for all types of scenarios.

The important part of this system is the function of the HDMI Multi Viewer. The functionality will allow for the switching between showing between Team A split screen, Team B split screen, Team A and B split screen, and each players view for up to 4 players! Allowing the one behind the broadcast to follow the action!
We're using a Cisco SG100D-08, 8 Port Gigabit Network Switch but you can use any 5 port switch. The cabling is color coded because it spares us having to buy a label maker and makes tracing easy, it's not following anyone's standards. Just loosely based on how many arcades would color code player 1 through 4 (most common I've seen people do).
The connection to PSN is for a license check, due to all 4 machines having digital copies of the game. This was done based on speculation, but we have not tested a fresh boot of all systems, running LAN mode, without being connected to the public internet (to reach PSN from the LAN).

At this time, to replicate exactly what we are doing here, there is a connection back to PSN. It's also thought, that this PSN connection is only required if doing game sharing (2 copies of the game, 4 consoles).

It is also possible that 4 physical copies of the game might not require this either, far more likely (if confirmed about the license check without game sharing). Again would also need confirmed. These discs are about 65-80 a copy, JPN language only.

Despite the title, it's actually the dedicated Tekken 5 (No idea what the official Namco Assembly is called), which had later a conversion kit for Soul Calibur 3 (I read that it could also be purchased up front from factory as such) but nothing to go back to an OLD game like Soul Calibur 2!

Wired for JAMMA, it's very similar in looks to the Sega Naomi Universal Cabinet and Sega New Net City. Height adjustable, wide panel for two players. Height is either sitting or standing position.

Here is the cab as it was originally loaded,

The two things right away, is we will require a monitor for it. The Namco System 246 shown, is not coming with it.

Here are some details for the CP since we got that in this weekend:

The panel has knockouts to make it 6 button but since this is straight up the Soul Calibur 2 machine, we're not going to knock those out. Plenty of other stuff exists already for 6 and 8 button titles.

Serenative getting an order going for controls here . . 3D players going to be eating good he says ! Nooo doubt !

Sounds like we may have someone in the area where the rest of the cab currently sits and can bring it down. We have the card reader and monitor bezel. Natively uses a flat tube. Looking at the bezel here, Wess and I noticed something interesting.. Nice fit huh..?

Yeah, the usual. Can't know anything without hard data, like having the cab here and pulling that tube to investigate in person but this is not a bad starting point!

Modify for RGB depending on which chassis we have here, and if not suitable, these pop up for free all the time in various models of this size.

Araiguma Battle : DDR Extreme ! ( Donation / Restoration )

Hello all!

As it's been talked about over the past couple of months, we're receiving an incredible donation from DDR Illini alum of a DDR Extreme cab!

The cab does not come with pads however, which makes sense as typically people get these, junk the cabs and only want the pads. This makes things difficult when sourcing these dance pads. Mostly due to cost! This can be an extreme hit. That said, in the Araiguma fashion of "Tech-Centric Mod Driven", we take the broken and make it work again!

Pads were sourced by ( Insert Name Here once they are cool with it ) who was very kind in helping us out with this. That said, these are going to be quite a project!

Here they are as they currently sit:

 IMG_6429.png (Size: 6.64 MB / Downloads: 0)

These two specifically on the left,

 IMG_6439 (1).png (Size: 23.86 MB / Downloads: 1)

And a better idea of how much of a project these will be!

 IMG_6440 (1).png (Size: 23.47 MB / Downloads: 0)

The price again, even for this condition, bless up to the individual who would be letting these go the way they are. Quite a few folks from here, regulars from DDRIllini and just folks from DDRIllini have offered to help in the restoration of the pads, super exciting!

We're going to be picking up the cab between the 18th and 22nd, but most likely the 21st or 22nd which would fall between RIP 13.5 and the holidays. Once we get closer to this date, possibly also today, going to start reaching out to see what peoples schedules are for getting a large group of us together to grab this thing.

The cab body is reported weighing 456lbs. The title unit is 61lbs. We'll be loading into either a pickup truck or box van, whichever we can determine to be the best way to do this.

 unknown.png (Size: 120.5 KB / Downloads: 1)

Since we're talking restoration, we can just make this all things for the entire project, it's future, etc. The plan is to have this machine nearby Room 28, in a public space where it can be used by anyone passing through the building during our off-hours. The thought of some kids randomly stumbling across DDR and it becoming thing for them is goals tbh. We also plan on sponsoring future Rumble in the Prairie events by loaning our pads out for the event weekends.

That would be our only expected downtime for DDR in the building (talking about future building).

So once we get the cab, we can start posting up some pics, condition, what all we got and need. Then in December, we're hoping to get the pads down, they are about 6 hours away, in one direction. ARP had mentioned crowd funding the trip to get them ourselves, we're also looking at shipping, or hiring one of the Araiguma bois up north to bring em down and stay the weekend with us, bringing the pads in the process.

So this is the start of documenting the addition of DDR to Araiguma Battle!
