Araiguma Battle : Versatile City B ! ( Head to Head Setup ) - Um Jamma Yammy - 12-02-2023

Alright, doing a second Versatile City since the player base has been growing so much for 3rd Strike, we needed a second! I was on the lookout for more monitors and Naomi mentioned she could donate a pair of like sets!

A lot of people have been reaching out asking how these are done, so this will be split to two different threads, one for the current Versatile City ( A ) and this new one ( B ) which is more of a log of the process.

Your setup will most likely vary. The beauty of this over a cab is it's versatility and movability. You can bring it to an event in a car, you can take it to a major with you more easily, you can plug in whatever the hell you want with nice lower hour tubes and hardware, it's just an infinite number of variables.

Versatile City B here is using two Sylvania 20" TVs, both with S-VIDEO and Composite input. If you have S-VIDEO use it over Composite. If you have Component, use that over S-VIDEO and Composite.

Something that catches some I've spoken with off guard, is don't worry about finding the same set to put back to back. Some can argue that on side has better picture than the other or whatever have you, but you can say the same about varying age on a persons sticks, you can say it about two like cabs, and same for two of the same TVs.

Getting them the same, or at least within the same series to look the same, is great if you can do it, but if you just find two of the same size, head to head those!! You'll eventually find a like pair if you really hunt for it.

1P Side = Sylvania 6420FE (Tube/Chassis TBD)
2P Side = Sylvania CR202SL8 (Tube/Chassis TBD)

We're using Radio Shack S-VIDEO / Composite / Audio Splitter/Amplifier. This is important! Passive splitting will not work (Very well), you must have an active splitter, meaning powered. The system you're hooking up, to the input type your TVs have will vary!

Any sort of good Digital to Analog Video Converter or sometimes called "HDMI to A/V" or "HDMI to S-VIDEO" converters. Buy enough, open enough, from 20$ to 100$ and you're sure to find the same chips and they will show up under Display Properties in windows as Macrosilicon (Though, won't specifically say a chip ID, you might find that under device manager if you dig). You can check them all out HERE. These guys are very popular for their chips, and do great stuff.

To get as close an angle to the Sega VS City, the wood block size used is: 3" D x 2-1/4" H (Length is dependent on the TV size - If you have a table saw, you can do a nice wedge to get your perfect angle!)

Then comes your USB disconnects. If you don't want to tether them to your table, you can screw in wire tie mounts to your monitor angle blocks, or use adhesive backing to tack them to the monitor, whatever you fancy. Ours are mounted on the tables. Something you'll want to be aware of, is USB length. The shorter the better, but in the case of a Versatile City, that's easier said than done.

You factor in your players. If their pad or stick has a 6ft to 10ft USB cable, and you have a 6ft USB disconnect from the game system of choice, you're at 12-16ft.

USB 2.0 Max length on a passive cable is 16FT. USB 1.0 is half that. So to eliminate any issues, no matter the length of your disconnect, even if 3ft, you want a "bus powered" meaning no external power, it's powered at the USB port (editing to say, you can use external power if you find a situation -- we only need bus powered so that's why it's mentioned here), "Active USB Extension". Bluerigger does really great Active Extensions, after a certain length they have an external power option in addition to bus power.

You also need a power strip that can handle everything. If you expand to streaming your setup, want to add fans or additional speakers, spectator monitors, you'll need something with enough outlets to compensate. We use the Belkin F9D1000-15:

So with all of that, here is a handy A/V Diagram you can use to see how it all goes together:

And here is the Head to Head Room as it currently sits with the new Versatile City!

Something else to finally add is toppers! The New Versus City (my favorite) as a perfect example has those big Blast City marquee spaces on them. Wanted to add something like that for a while but didn't have the money. This is being shown on the Versatile City A, but the same will go for any setup. If you have a single set and want to add a topper, this would also really benefit you.

So here it is. Two 11x17, landscape orientation sign holders. You get one for each side, get someone to print the Marquee of your choice in 11x17, and this is what you get!
